Captain Goodin and another member of the department (Mt. Victory Fire Department) had returned from an EMS call and returned their apparatus to service. Captain Goodin mentioned to his colleague that he did not feel well and then collapsed, striking his head on the bumper of a vehicle. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. |

It is with deep regret and sadness that I report the passing of Firefighter/Paramedic Randy McCarty of Prestonsburg, KY on the evening of January 24, 2005. Randy fell ill at his home and later died at Highlands Regional Medical Center of an apparent heart attack. He was employed as a firefighter/paramedic with Paintsville Fire-Rescue-EMS, was formerly a member of the Oil Springs Volunteer Fire Department, and most recently had served as an assistant chief of W.R. Castle Vol. Fire & Rescue. He is survived by his wife, one son, three stepchildren, his mother, and one brother. Visitation will be Wednesday at Paintsville Station 1 and prior to the funeral at 1 pm Thursday, also at Station 1. |

Its with deep regret that I most inform you that Ret. Fire Chief Gilmore Phelps of London Fire Department has passed away. Chief Gilmore severed London & Laurel Co. for 53 years, from 1936 - 1989. He was Chief for 36 years from 1953 - 1989. Chief Gilmore still has a son on London Fire Department and another that is on the London City Council. Arrangement are as follows: Visitation is scheduled for Monday night from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm @ House - Rawlings Funeral Home 510 E 4th St., London with funeral services to take place Tuesday at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church of London, 804 W 5th St. London. It is with great sorrow and a heavy heart that I have to tell you of the loss of a brother Firefighter/EMT. Fire Chief Jason "Todd" Rowe with Elkhorn Volunteer Fire Department and Public Relations Officer With Pike County Firefighters Association Passed Away on 12/23/2004. Todd was performing an air bag class at Elkhorn City VFD around 1900 hours. While he was under the truck, the truck rolled forward causing the middle air bag to be put under strain and popped out and struck Todd in the head. Life saving procedures were started ASAP and Todd was transported to Pikeville Medical Center where he was pronounced dead around 2100 hours. Todd was a 12 year veteran of the fire service, and Fire Chief for the last 7 years. |

Dewey Darrel Nelson died following an illness in the month of June. D.D. Nelson served on the Turkey Creek Volunteer Fire Department since 1986. He was the Assistant Chief of the Fire Department for many years. D.D. also pastored the Turkey Creek Freewill Baptist Church until his death in June 2003. D.D. "When I am called to duty god wherever flames may rage, give me the strength to save some life whatever be it's age. Help me to embrace a little child before it is to late, or save an older person from the horror of that fate. Enable me to be alert and hear the weakest shout, and quickly and efficiently to put the fire out. I want to fill my calling and give the best in me, to guard my every neighbor and protect their property. And if according to your will I am to lose my life. Bless with your protecting hand my children and my wife. Form all the Firefighters of Turkey Creek Volunteer Fire Department. We miss you chief!!! |

On August 18, 2003 William Bryan Russell passed away due to illness. He was an engineer with the South Russell Volunteer Fire Dept. of Russell Couty Ky. He was loved by all fireman, and the community. A fireman's Funeral was given to him, with numerous fire and other emergency services present. Also Charles Shaw from the state was present. |

Randy G. Utley 30, of Grayson, Kentucky was killed June 16th responding to an emegency in Carter County. He was a firefighter with Grayson Fire Department and an EMT with Carter County EMS. He joined the fire dept. in May 2001 and was certified as an EMT in June 2002. |

On Wednesday, October 17, Firefighter Tim Whalin, 26, the publisher of the Kentucky Fire Wire , passed away following an illness. Tim had been a valuable and active member of the Harrods Creek Fire Department since 1995 and his accomplishments include becoming an EMT, apparatus operator, director of the Harrods Creek Explorer program, and webmaster of Harrods Creek's web site |
